Tehelne Pole: Brickfield We Love You

Published by at 12:04 am under Domestic and tagged: ,

These are not the best times for fans of Slovan Bratislava.  For home league games, it is a relief that attendances still top 1,000. One of the principle reasons for this is the fans’ bitter dislike of Pasienky stadium, their ‘temporary’ home.  The true home for Slovan Bratislava fans is the currently decaying Tehelne Pole stadium.  It must be quite demoralising for the fans to see nothing being done about the rebuilding of their beloved stadium.  Here is an emotional video from Slovan Bratislava’s loyal fans:

Great ground, all you would expect from an Eastern European stadium and more, pity that it does not attract the crowd but obviously tough in countries such as Slovakia where winter sports are king.

Hope they sort the situation out soon, if only to see that old scoreboard again!! Awesome

Personally, I always found Tehelne Pole a bit of a dump. But, as with grounds like the old Burnden Park or the Victoria Ground at Stoke, you could kind of understand the home fans’ attachment. And I won’t deny that I always enjoyed visiting TP for international games ; never saw Slovakia lose there either.

A year ago (almost to the day) we took an American colleague there to see Slovakia vs the USA. For her, the muddy puddles all over the concourse, leaky roof and broken seats were all part of the rich cultural experience that Slovak football offers.

Some of the intact seats have found a temporary home in Prievoz, where Petrzalka play now.

I am not a fan of Slovan Bratislava, but I am very not like it when there is stadium arson from the fans. The event was not a motivation but a threat to the players. The players must be getting scared to play for fear that these events happen again.

You mean the flares Jonas? Their use is subject to ongoing debate, obviously you have to come to stadiums in places like Slovakia now for the fans to be able to smuggle them in. I am not so sure they are being used as a threat though, Slovan’s fans used them again this season at Pasienky, and the players seemed to be thoroughly part of those celebrations. But I won’t argue with you, there are people who like them and people who very much dislike them. I also wouldn’t fancy taking my children inside a stadium where flares are being used. However they do create quite an atmosphere…
