Stastny Novy Rok 2011! Britski Belasi’s New Year Message!

Published by under Uncategorized

I would just like to send my best wishes for a healthy and successful 2011 and use the opportunity to show my huge appreciation to everyone who reads, follows and contributes to the Britski Belasi blog.  We’ve come a long way since we started 6 months ago, and could there be a more fitting way to end the year than with an appearance on the Guardian’s 100 Football Blogs to Follow in 2011?!

I must admit, I was really chuffed to get a mention on this list, obviously there has been some hard work involved but most importantly it has been pure enjoyment all the way.  We are proud of the fact we give English language coverage to the game in Slovakia and it gives us great satisfaction when we get regular or new readers (yes even the Delije) commenting on our articles. The healthy debate we often seem to generate is fantastic, and the varied preferences of regular contributors James Baxter (Zilina), Ian Cusack (Petrzalka) and myself (Slovan) just adds to the mix.

I really would like to thank James for all the fantastic articles he has written for this site, James’ writing is of such quality he appears regularly in When Saturday Comes and I guess I’m just lucky that magazines like that can’t publish on Slovak football every month!  So I discovered one gem and then another came along, it took some time to convince Ian Cusack that we’re alright really, but it was worth it; I’m currently posting one article a day from a series Ian wrote for the Middlesborough fanzine Fly Me to the Moon over a decade ago.  It is fantastic to read Ian’s articles which were written at a time when he was following Artmedia Petrzalka around Slovakia, honestly time has enhanced these stories – it really is fascinating to see what has and what hasn’t changed in the last 10 years.  Give them a try!

I’d like to thank Ralph Davies, Andy Hudson and Daniel Griffin for their contributions, welcome back any time guys! Obviously I can’t mention the whole world of Twitter, but the community out there is simply wonderful and everybody plays their part in making football blogging the pleasure that it is.

Here’s hoping for much more of the same in 2011, good luck to everybody and I really look forward to meeting more of you on our football travels around Europe.

As for on-the-field matters, firstly Slovan Bratislava – I don’t wish for much – just a new stadium and an unbeaten 2nd half of the season, leading to a couple of tasty European qualifiers in July / August, which will of course be won.  Actually let’s keep things simple and apply the same wishes for the National Team.  Let’s sort the stadium out, win these remaining qualifiers and start looking forward to Euro 2012 up the road in Poland!  Optimistic thinking?!  Maybe, but you can be sure Britski Belasi will be following!
